Jennycliff

Back in September, we wrote about Mountbatten Pier, which is one of the loveliest places in plymouth. The next bay along is Jennycliff, and we went there today because it's a lovely spring day and it's one of our favourite places in Plymouth.

It's a secluded little beach that has lots of flat stones you can skim. You can sit and hide from the world or get a great view of the city. There is nothing not to love about the place.

We took some photos.

More on books

One of the most exciting things happening in our house at the moment is that Alex's mum and dad are building a new book shelf for us.

We asked for this primarily because, last year, Alex sent me to Taunton on a mission to retrieve a virtually complete set of the English Law Reports from 1563-present day. These 250 volumes of law have been sat in our kitchen ever since. We're looking forward to them having a permanent home.

They are going to be joined on the bookshelf by a gift of theology books that my dad gave me last week. At the moment, we have 6 crates of theology ready to unpack in our living room.

We like books.

Books we have read/reading.

Currently having a good read as well, as a spin off of having been on holiday.

Completed The Final Solution by Michael Chabon, which is a great little novella in the style of the English detective story with a powerful twist at the end.

We're currently reading When We Were Orphans by Kazuo Ishiguro, who is fast becoming a favourite contemporary author of ours. Loving this book.

On the side, Im dipping into Simon Armitage's Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, which is great fun to read because of all the alliteration. If you have a 13 year old boy in your life who doesn't get poetry, give him this, he will love it. Also, as part of the church's 'read a book for lent' challenge, which I instigated, (?!?) I'm reading a commentary on the book of Isaiah.

Garden Update

Our garden is starting to look most spring like. The side border has been finished and it's first plants are in. Also, the first local cat to use it as a litter tray has done so. We have some nice crocuses and we think a buddleia that survived the concrete & rubble that was there before.

In the back, the daffodils are lovely, the digging i did with some of the roses to move them has worked and the new magnolia tree is doing ok.

We're also moving in the right direction to be able to get the money to change our shed. Exciting horticultural times in Plymouth.

Funny thing to do

Sing,

"Ruby, ruby, ruby murray
Cockney rhyming slang for curry."

To the new Kaiser Chiefs song. Guaranteed to improve your listening experience.

We went on holiday.

We went on holiday to Stratford upon avon last week. Which was great, a lovely break. We stayed at the Ettington Park Hotel, which is amazing, a plush country manor that has been converted. Great restaurant, great service, lovely grounds that you can walk in. We fell in love with the place.

We spent time in Stratford and saw a couple of Shakespeare's. Coriolanus at the RST was good, but Twelth Night in Russian by the Checkov international theatre festival was amazing. Brilliant production. If you get the chance to see them, do.

Anyway, here are some of the holiday photos of the hotel and grounds, so you can see what a lovely time we had. We went for a walk in the grounds and met a friendly swan.

Music artist of the month

At the moment, I have 2 mobile phones. I got a bit gipped on the end of contract/start of contract thing. It's ok because I needed a new phone, & because I now have the joys of quadrapop (tetris like game) in my life, and also because 3 give me lots of free music downloads. So I'm paying over the odds for a phone I don't use, but i get a free album every month until may. So this month's free album is by Hot Chip, who I think are great and I thought I'd attach a video of theirs. Last month, I was mostly liking The Little Ones, who are also great, but in a very different way.
